Dental Consumables Market: Opportunities & Challenges

The prominent players operating in the dental consumables market include Straumann Holding AG (Switzerland), Danaher Corporation (US), Dentsply Sirona (US), 3M Company (US), Henry Schein, Inc. (US).
Growth in the dental consumables market can primarily be attributed to the rising incidence of dental diseases, increasing demand for cosmetic dentistry, growing dental tourism in emerging markets, and the increasing disposable income in developing countries.

The dental consumables market is projected to reach USD 38,727.5 million by 2024 from USD 27,868.0 million in 2019, at a CAGR of 6.8% during the forecast period. Growth in the dental consumables market can primarily be attributed to the rising incidence of dental diseases, increasing demand for cosmetic dentistry, growing dental tourism in emerging markets, and the increasing disposable income in developing countries. However, the high cost and limited reimbursements for dental procedures are expected to limit the growth of this market to a certain extent.

How the penetration rate of dental implants in developing countries is an opportunity?

The penetration of dental implants is very low in developing countries and also in certain developed countries such as the UK, owing to their high prices. However, with the increasing number of clinics in these countries and the availability of quality dental services at relatively lower costs, the acceptance of dental implants is expected to increase in the near future. The dental implants markets in the UK and France is also expected to grow due to the increasing focus on cosmetic dentistry.

Advanced aesthetic solutions in restorative dentistry have limited acceptance in India, Brazil, and Russia. These countries require extensive promotional and awareness campaigns for both dentists as well as consumers to ensure product visibility and increased acceptance. Hence, Asian and Latin American countries as well as certain European countries offer significant growth opportunities for the dental implants segment of the dental consumables market. Knowing the potential in these regions, a majority of the market players are strategically increasing their presence in various developing countries by opening new subsidiaries, collaborating with various dental product distributors and dental universities, and partnering with local players.

Why the dearth of trained dental practitioners is a challenge?

The demand for dental care services is expected to grow across the globe mainly due to the changing demographics, growing dental care awareness, and the rising prevalence of dental diseases. However, a shortage of dental professionals in countries such as the US is expected to restrain market growth to a certain extent. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services, 198,517 dentists were active in 2017 in the US, which is expected to increase to 202,600 by 2025. Based on dental workforce data from 2012, it is estimated that the excess growth in demand in relation to dentist supply will result in a national shortage of dental professionals in the US. Similarly, according to a report titled “The Future of Dentistry” by the American Dental Association, the number of dentists per 100,000 people has declined in the US during the last decade; a shortfall of 16,046 dentists is expected in the US by 2020. Similarly, regions such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America have a shortage of oral health personnel. For instance, in Africa, the dentist-to-population ratio is ~1:150,000 (this figure is ~1:2,000 in developed countries). According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, in 2016, the dentist-to-population ratio in India was 1:8,000 in urban areas and 1:50,000 in rural areas. The shortage of dentists in these countries is one of the major factors that is expected to reduce the adoption of dental consumables in spite of the presence of a large target patient population.
