Bariatric Surgery Center Remains Open With New COVID-19 Protocols
The Obesity Control Center, located just south of San Diego, has implemented new Coronavirus protocols. According to a recent article published by the center, patients recognize that weight loss is more important than ever to avoid Covid complications.

The Obesity Control Center is pleased to share the publication of the article “Patients Feel Safe At OCC As COVID-19 Makes Bariatric Surgery More Important Than Ever” about the benefits of bariatric surgery, particularly as they relate to vulnerable and high-risk patients, such as those struggling with obesity. Included are several patient testimonials about how they felt safe getting bariatric surgery at OCC during the pandemic. At OCC, particular care is taken to maintain an efficient and safe care environment for its patients and the workforce.

The Obesity Control Center is closely monitoring the path and status of COVID-19, and updates will be issued as necessary to ensure that the center complies with information and recommendations from the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control. The pandemic has caused OCC safety procedures to be more relevant than ever because severe obesity is one of the higher risk factors for the disease. Those individuals who are obese are also at risk for many other chronic diseases.

Obesity is a known risk factor for respiratory infection and is also more widely recognized as a factor for COVID susceptibility and severity. Obese patients with the infection are at a higher risk of mortality. Studies show that obesity increases the risk of severe illness, may triple the risk of hospitalization, is linked to impaired immune function, decreases lung reserve and lung capacity, and can increase the difficulty of ventilation. As the Body Mass Index (BMI) increases, the risk of mortality from the Coronavirus also increases.

Additionally, the ASMBS, as of 06/23/20, considers bariatric surgery medically necessary time sensitive surgery.

The OCC in Mexico is committed to providing advanced, high-quality care in a setting that protects the well-being of both patients and staff. Social distancing, mask-wearing, and other practices are strongly recommended while the disease is a concern. The state-of-the-art center practices the highest safety standards to help patients achieve weight loss goals and lead healthier lives.
