Marijuana Addiction Rehab is Not a Myth

Experts are warning against the dangers of marijuana addiction, with 30% of users suspected of being dependent on the drug and potentially needing marijuana rehab.

Marijuana rehab specialists 1000 Islands Addiction Rehab said that people using marijuana before the age of 18 were seven times more likely to become addicted to the drug than adults who started using it and the number who were needing marijuana rehab was increasing rapidly.

A spokesman at 1000 Islands Addiction Rehab said that so many people don’t accept that marijuana is an addictive and dangerous drug that the majority of people don’t take addiction or marijuana rehab seriously.

“People who are using marijuana for medical purposes are using it in controlled circumstances, with set amounts prescribed at certain times. Those who are using marijuana for recreational use are not monitoring how much they take and how often they are taking it, and many of them don’t believe that it is addictive. That is where problems start to arise.

“Then there is the worry that many people who take marijuana are more likely to move on to other even more harmful substances and evidence has shown that this does happen.

“Friends and family of marijuana users need to be aware of some of the signs of marijuana addiction and when marijuana addiction rehab might be needed,” he added.

Signs of marijuana addiction include:

  • Impaired coordination
  • Slow reflexes
  • Lack of interest in their day to day life
  • Revolving their schedules around being able to take marijuana
  • High risk behavior
  • Impaired judgement
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations

He added: “If someone is using marijuana more and more regularly then their brain and body adapts. Many don’t even recognize they have a problem as they won’t accept that marijuana is an addictive drug. If they decide to stop then withdrawal symptoms will occur, which can be scary. This is when many people relapse and reach for the marijuana again to make themselves feel better.

“Marijuana addiction rehab will help people give up the drug with professional and qualified support. Medical supervision is particularly important if people have underlying health conditions, or if they have been using the drug alongside alcohol. Withdrawal symptoms can include headaches, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, irritability, agitation anxiety, depression and mood swings – all of which can be managed in a safe and controlled environment by a team of medical professionals.

Addiction.ca offers a residential support program that is tailor-made to help people give up marijuana. As well as qualified medical staff to help manage the detox part of their program, they will offer one on one counseling, support groups, family therapy and activities such as yoga, meditation, art therapy or music therapy to help its patients move the focus of their lives away from marijuana.
