Report Encourages People to Consider Hardwood Floor Refinishing

Hardwood floor refinishing is better for the environment than completely replacing the floor, a report has revealed.

A study by the Swedish Environment Research Institute said that by refinishing flooring, people can reduce their carbon footprint by 78 per cent. It said that it proved that refinishingis more sustainable than replacing a floor and it will improve the appearance of the floor.

The 12 study was carried out over 12 months and focused on the Swedish flooring and construction market.

Hardwood floor refinishing specialists LV Hardwood Flooring said that most people who used quality wood and qualified and experience hardwood floor fitters, may never need to replace their floor as long as they looked after it.

A spokesman for the company said: “Hardwood floors are designed to last for decades and even centuries. Look at some historical buildings. If you can look after afloor then it will stay in good condition. Refinishing is a great way to rejuvenate an old wood floor and in some cases it can give a wood floor a completely new look.

To refinish a hardwood floor you firstly sand the top layer of the wood, and buff and clean the floor. You then apply a stain and lacquer over the existing wood. This is where you can transform the look of your floor. Because the original stain has been removed, you can apply any color stain you like hence creating a brand new floor.

Refinishing is sometimes mistaken as resurfacing. They are different processes. Refinishing is designed to refresh and revitalize a floor or change the color of it to give a room or a house a new look. Resurfacing is a more involved process that is designed to help with better functionality of the floor. This would involve removing planks that are damaged or uneven and replacing them with new ones.  Or sanding down the old planks to even them out and use new nails to secure them. Once the resurfacing has been completed, quite often refinishing will need to be done to finish the floor off.

The spokesman from LV Hardwood Flooring added: “Many people think they can refinish their own floors as it sounds so simple, but this is a very skilled job. We also use specialist sanding equipment that is not normal garage machinery for most people. If you use a team of skilled experts then the job is like to be much more professional and finished much quicker than if someone took on the project themselves. We would particularly recommend using experts if the floor is a herringbone design as it takes a particular skill to be able to preserve the pattern,” he added.
